The EU GSP + mainly through exports have contributed significantly towards Sri Lanka’s development and prosperity. This has brought direct benefits reaching to the most vulnerable segments of local society.

This was opined by Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation and President and Sri Lanka European Union Parliamentary Friendship Association, Pavithra Devi Wanniarachchi at the Europe Day hosted by the European Union Delegation in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s cooperation with the European Union since Sri Lanka’s formal Partnership Agreement in 1995 has led to many investments in the country as well.

Sri Lanka considers the EU to be an important investment partner. “As Sri Lanka works its way towards reinvigorating our economy we will expect the EU to look further towards Sri Lanka as an investment destination.

In the face of the significant geo-political challenges our countries are faced with, we will work on many common fronts from climate change, cyber security to advance our economic prosperity and stability. It is in this context that our valued partnership for mutual cooperation and prosperity becomes even more significant.

EU development assistance has helped a great deal to cushion the impact of the economic downturn.

“We deeply appreciate the EU’s contribution towards this and also for global vaccine equity via COVAX and to date the EU has exported around 19 million C-19 vaccine doses to Sri Lanka since 2020. Along with our universal healthcare policy practiced by successive governments, it assisted Sri Lanka to unveil an effective vaccine policy to overcome the pandemic.”

“We look forward to the visit by the EU Parliamentary delegation in November in order to strengthen our robust engagement with the legislatures. EU’s efforts in our peace building and reconciliation efforts are also valued and appreciated.”

Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to Sri Lanka, Denis Chaibi also participated.
