Two new hammer throw records set up on third day

Two new hammer throw records were set up by Nithinsa Mandani and Yuthara Jayaweera on the third day of the National Junior Athletic championship worked off at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama yesterday.

It was interesting to see hammer throw events worked off which is not very familiar to schools. But young athletes really performed well and set up records yesterday at Diyagama. Yuthara Linduli Jayaweera of Anula Vidyalaya Nugegoda established a new meet record of the under 18 girls hammer throw event with a distance of 36.79 m and previous record was held by Shanika Samanmali of Mahamaya MV Nugegoda (34.45m) in 2019. Selvakumar Sevvanam of Polikandy Hindu Tamil mixed school Valvettithurai was placed second in this event with a 30.76m throw.

Meanwhile Nithinsa Mandani of Yatiyana MV Matara excelled at the under 23 women’s hammer throw event as she set up a new meet record of 40m and broke the nine year old record which was held by S.M Amarasinghe of Lanka Lions SC (36.77m) in 2013.

The under 20 boys 10, 000m event was won by Suman Keeran of Mulankavi National school Kilinochchi clocking 35.35:92 Minutes while M. Dinushan of Saraswathi Central College Pussellawa with a timing of 35.42:31 Minutes was placed second and Lakindu Nirman of Ananda Shashtralaya Mathugama clocking 37.19:81 Minutes was placed third. The under 23 men’s 10, 000 m event was won by M.S.A Fernando of Colombo District AA with 33.29:62 Minutes. Girls under 23 10, 000 m event was won by Nayana Sewwandi of Kalutara DAA with a timing of 45.25:87 Minutes.

N.M Herath of Nannapurawa MV Bibila won under 20 girls long jump event with a leap of 6.06m while Pawan Induwara of St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa won the boys under 16 Javelin throw event with a distance of 52.43m. Sandeep Iresh of same school won boys under 18 javelin throw event with a 56m throw while Inura Piyasiri of Sri Lanka Army won under 23 men’s long jump event with 7.39m jump.

Kavindi Edirisinghe of Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo impressed with girls under 23 400m event as she won first place clocking 57.65 seconds while T.D Silva of Sri Lanka Air Force was placed first in girls under 23 100 m clocking 12.52 seconds.

Today is the final day of the National Junior Athletic Championship which is conducted by Sri Lanka Athletics. In fact this meet is considered as selection trials for the Commonwealth Youth Games but bad weather made great hindrance for athletes.
