The Sri Lanka Navy apprehended six persons suspected of attempting to migrate illegally to a foreign country via sea.

The apprehension was made during a search operation conducted off Erukkalampiddi, Mannar, on May 5. The operation also led to the seizure of a dinghy used for this illegal act.

The Navy often conducts search operations in the coastal areas surrounding the island as illegal immigration poses serious consequences for the safety and security of the countries involved. As an extension of these operations, SLNS Gajaba in the North Central Naval Command made this apprehension, having spotted a suspicious dinghy in the sea area of Erukkalampiddi. The dinghy was carrying six individuals and among them were two males (including the boat skipper), one female and three children.

The suspects are identified as residents of the Vavuniya and Mannar areas. The group of individuals were handed over to the Mannar Police for onward legal proceedings.
