Belarus Police probe Sri Lankan Medical student’s death

Police investigations have begun into the death of a 24-year-old Sri Lankan medical student was found dead in a room in the student hostel   at Grodno State Medical University in Belarus on April 30. The deceased student has been identified as Thishan Kularatne.

This student had studied at a leading boys’ school in Kandy and subsequent to getting through the Advanced Level examination in the Bio stream had entered the Grodno University in Belarus with the hope of becoming a doctor. He had been studying in his fourth year at this university, at the time of his death and had succeeded in winning the awards for the most talented student during his first, second and third years of studies. He had been a deputy prefect at his school during his younger days and had been clever at extra-curricular activities. He had been a friendly student and had been teaching students, lessons they had missed, as well.

It is reported that since he had not responded to telephone calls, several students had visited his hostel and gone to the deceased student Thishan Kularatne’s room to inquire about him and then discovered his dead body.

It has become known that the visiting students had observed a bandage tied round his neck and that the other end of it had been tied to a cupboard inside the room. The Belarus police are carrying out investigations to find out whether the death of this student was due to suicide or some other reason.
