Law-abiding citizens have nothing to fear from ATA - SB

Parliamentarian S.B. Dissanayake said that it is only the terrorists and those involved in anti-social activities who should fear the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) while the disciplined and law-abiding citizens see this Act in a positive light.

The MP further added that people who break the law, disrespect the law as well as people who support terrorism and social activities as the only way to gain power are against this proposed Anti-Terrorism Act. MP Dissanayake speaking to the Daily News emphasized that freedom of speech, expression, assembly and agitation is not limited by the Anti-Terrorism Act since the Act will not hinder the normal life of the people.

However, he pointed out that if anyone suspects that the right of expression and freedom of the people will be restricted by the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act, there is the possibility of going to the Supreme Court against the Act.Dissanayake noted that he is sure that neither the Constitution nor the Supreme Court will allow any bill that violates the basic rights of the people and violates human rights.

The MP further added that he is sure that the Supreme Court will not approve any proposal or bill that violates the basic rights or human rights of the people. He also said that if necessary, the Supreme Court has the ability to order the approval of a two-thirds majority of the Parliament or to hold a Referendum to pass any Bill.

Therefore, the MP said that there is no need to fear the Anti-Terrorist Act as there is no constitutional or judicial power to pass an act, which harms the free and fair activities of just society. He points out that the proposed Anti-Terrorism Act will further strengthen people’s rights, not curtail them.
