Asia Rugby lifts suspension on Sri Lanka rugby

The Asia Rugby (AR) has lifted the suspension imposed on Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) which was in tandem since April last year. This was confirmed by a communique released by AR recently.

After the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs officially confirmed the cancellation of the gazette notification dated April 1st, 2022 recently, considering this, the Asian Rugby governing body has made the prudent decision to reinstate SLR as a full member of AR. Initially the suspension was served during an AR meeting held on April 9th, 2022, in Phuket, Thailand, where the AR Executive Committee (EXCO)temporarily suspended SLR membership subsequently on May 1st, 2022 EXCO unanimously ratified the decision and imposed a full membership suspension.

Asia Rugby President Qais al Dhalai stated, “The EXCO’s decision to suspend Sri Lanka Rugby’s membership was made in accordance with Asia Rugby’s Articles and Regulations to maintain our principles of equality, transparency and accountability. I am pleased to hear about the withdrawal of the gazette notification, making it possible for Asia Rugby to lift the suspension.”

“We look forward to welcoming Sri Lanka teams back to Asia Rugby competitions.” Qais further added Meanwhile, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe appointed a nine-member management committee under the leadership of Chula Dharmadasa to run the affairs of SLR. He took this decision of suspending the incumbent regime headed by Rizly Illyas due to various reasons.

The present committee comprises former national players, professional and personal serving the defence services. They will manage the future endeavors of the SLR and surge ahead to make sure that oval-shaped ball game run smoothly without any hassle with the support of the Sports Minister. (AN)
