Isipathana College will look to make a lasting impression when the historic CR and FC Centenary Inter-Schools Under-19 Seven-A-Side Rugby Tournament gets underway at Longden Place today.

The lads from Havelock Park have always made it a habit of winning some of the most prestigious tournaments in the country and once again they will be out to showcase their capabilities in the shorter format of the game.

In addition, this event will also provide Isipathana with the opportunity of warming-up in preparation for the 2023 Inter-Schools Rugby season, which kicks-off with the Under-19 Sevens scheduled for next month.

Isipathana, of course, have already made their presence felt this year as they secured the Inter-Schools Under-18 Championship in Kandy earlier this month by overcoming Royal College 21-0 in the Cup Championship final.

However, Isipathana will have two tough games on the opening day as they will face the newly promoted Zahira outfit in their opening fixture before taking on the giant-killers Vidyartha College in the second outing of Group ‘C’.

In fact, Vidyartha have produced some stunning upsets in this format in the recent past and they were able to reach the semi-finals of the Under-18 Sevens Tournament before going down to Royal 5-10 during extra time.

Meanwhile, three top teams, Royal, St. Peter’s College and Wesley College will vie for a quarter-final spot from Group ‘A’ while the clash between St. Joseph’s College and Trinity College will most probably decide the Group ‘B’ champions which also comprises Piliyandala Central.

D. S. Senanayake College, who are back in the ‘A’ Division rugby this season following their heroics last year, will start favourites to top Group ‘D’ ahead of S. Thomas’ College and Kingswood College.

Meanwhile, the Inter-Club Sevens Tournament of the CR and FC Centenary will commence on Saturday with the participation of all eight ‘A’ Division clubs in the country.

Two overseas teams, Kahuna Australia and Doha RFC will compete in the Women’s Sevens Tournament along with Air Force SC, CR and FC, Army SC and Navy SC.
