First consignment of Pelwatte Ceylon Butter exported to the Maldives

Creating Sri Lankan diary history a consignment of Pelwatte Ceylon Butter was exported to the Maldives from Colombo yesterday adding a new commodity to Sri Lanka’ export basket.

Chairman Pelwatte Dairy Ariyaseela Wickramanayake said this is the first time they exported butter and the main reason for this is excess supply in Sri Lanka. “Our target is to export around 100 toons per month of Pelwatte Ceylon Butter to the Maldives.”

He also said that Pelwatte Ceylon Butter will be exported to Maldivian supermarket chains and retail shops and most importantly to hotels in Male which not includes five and six star hotel chains as well. “This will give a good branding not only for Pelwatte company but to Sri Lanka as it will carry the made in Sri Lanka tag. He said next they will be exporting Pelwatte Ceylon butter to Japan and approvals in this regard are being obtained. “We also hope to attract around USD 20 million of Foreign exchange from these two operations in the next 18 months.”

He said that with the new duty free access concessions offered to Sri Lanka and UK their next export destination would be UK and the European countries.

The company has also received both local and international certifications for Pelwatte Ceylon butter.
