First consignment of eggs from India here - Minister

To be available in the open market in three days

Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando told Parliament yesterday that the first consignment of eggs imported from India has reached the Colombo Port yesterday.

He said that it will take another three days to release the imported eggs to the bakery industry.

The Minister answering SJB MP Rohana Bandara said that eggs are released after the investigations conducted by the Health Ministry. “A Cabinet sub-committee made a unanimous decision that eggs should be imported. That is why we imported shelled eggs. Today, the first batch of eggs has arrived at the Colombo port. Accordingly, it will take another three days to complete the investigations. This institution is the institution that supplies eggs to other countries adhering to the highest world standards. We have imported these eggs after obtaining all the required certificates. These eggs will be available for sale in the coming days.

“There is a deficit of 40 percent of eggs in this country. The festive season is coming. If you check ten shops, there are no eggs in at least eight shops out of the ten. My ministry will import any product if the country is in short supply. If I can’t do that, my ministerial position is useless,” he said.
