Six athletes reach Asian Youth qualifying level

Six Youth Athletes reached qualifying standards of their respective events at the Selection Trials for the Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2023 which concluded in Diyagama recently.

Four male athletes and two female athletes in four events met the qualifying standards in a two-day trial for the 5th Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2023, which will be held in Uzbekistan in April.

Anuhas Bandara from Dharmaloka College, Ambalangoda sprinted the Boys’ 100m in 11.37s whilst Braini Anujana from Kumarathunga Munidasa National School won the Girls’ 100m with a timing of 12.65s.

Meanwhile Ayomal Akalanka from Ambagamuwa MV, the reigning youth 400m hurdles champion, recorded a timing of 52.87sec, while both Lesandu Arthavidu from D.S Senanayake College and Nilupul Pehesara from Vijitha Central College, Dickwella cleared the 2.00m qualifying standard in the high jump event.

In the Boys’ Pole Vault event, Malindraratna Silva of Maris Stella College, Negombo cleared 4.65m to reach the entry standard.

The Wickramabahu National School duo, Nirmali Wickramasinghe and Dulanjana Pradeepani matched the qualifying standards in the Girls’ 1500m event with 4 minutes and 47.59 seconds timing.

According to the President of Sri Lanka Athletics Rt Major General Palitha Fernando the youngsters are in good form to reach the qualifying standard under the supervision of National coach Y. K Kularatne. Meanwhile senior athletes are also continue training focussing on next Asian Games in China.
