The Iran Cultural Centre has opened an ‘Iran Corner’ at the Colombo Public Library in honour of famous Persian poet and story writer Nezami Ganjari on March 11. Iran Corner will provide an insight into the history of the arts, culture, poetry and scientific achievements and developments of Iran.

Cultural Councillor of Iran Cultural Section B. M. Goodarzi and Chief Librarian of Colombo Public Library Waruni Gagabadaarachchi attended the inauguration ceremony.

Cultural Councillor Goodarzi said knowledge and interaction with the cultures of other nations are factors for a sustainable development. There is no need to remind ourselves of the important role that books and libraries play in development, and the opening of the ‘Iran Corner’ at the Colombo Public Library is a step taken in the direction of sustainable development and strengthening of cultural relations between the two countries.

Iran is a large country with a rich and proud history and culture. Persian poetry is the foundation of the rich Iranian Culture.

Goodarzi thanked the Colombo Public Library which took major strides in expanding relations and cultivating recognition and empathy between the peoples of the two countries. They hope to see further expansion of these relations by holding the Iran-Sri Lanka Children’s Friendship Week at this library in June. An Iranian film also was screened for students during the event.

National Library Documentation and Services Board W. M. Aravinda and Public Library officials were also present.
