Sri Lanka over 50 team All rounder Ruwin Pieris played a major role to win their first two matches against Australia and New Zealand at the Over 50 World Cup cricket tournament which is now in progress in Cape Town, South Africa.

It was a fine effort from former NCC opener Ruwin Pieris who scored superb knock of 94 against Australia in the opening game while he took 4 for 18 as leg spinner to gain a second match win over New Zealand.

At the opening game against Australia Sri Lanka scored 234 for 7 wickets in 50 overs while opener Ruwin Pieris was leading the way scoring 94 unfortunately run out. He struck 10 fours and a six. Carman Mapatuna (21), skipper Senerath Seneviratne (32) and Chaminda Rajapaksa (36n.0) made useful contributions. Brett James took 3 for 36 for Australia. Australia managed to get 230 for 9 wickets in 50 overs while Richard Gabs top scored 71. Suwanji Madanayake 2 for 66, Dilan Fernandesz 2 for 46 and Carman Mapatuna 2 for 6 bowled well for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka over 50 team scored 193 all out in 42 overs against New Zealand while Suranjith Dharmasena top scored 36 well supported by opener Vajira Wijegunawardena(26), Prasanna Jayawardena(29) and Chaminda Rajapaksa (22). Andrew Nuttall took 3 for 35 for Kiwis. New Zealand managed to get 177 all out in 43.4 overs while Adrian Dale top scored 46 and Ruwin Pieris made most of the damage having 4 for 18 in nine over spell while Suwanji Madanayake 2 for 28 and Carman Mapatuna captured 2 for 35.

Sri Lanka over 50 team will meet West Indies today.
