Behaviour of politically affiliated monks frustrating - SLPP

SLPP MP S. M. Chandrasena said that he feels a lot of pain about the way the student Buddhist monks are behaving in society today.

He stated this while attending media conference held at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party headquarters in Colombo yesterday.

He said that as a person who once received the primary education as a lay student from a Pirivena, it is a sad situation that Buddhism and religious environment that existed in the temple at that time has been completely destroyed at the present time.

“I saw how the student monks behaved in the media. One monk walked out without his robe, which was tangled in the fence. As Buddhists, I am very frustrated. I have studied Pali and Sanskrit as a lay student for some time in a Pirivena. The Buddhism that existed in the temple at that time has completely destroyed by the behaviour of these student monks. With the religious environment is such, how a country can move forward?” he questioned.

Speaking on the political and economic background of the country, he said that the people of this country know the factors and reasons that led to the economic crisis. Due to the Corona epidemic, the economy of the whole world collapsed. Due to the Russian-Ukrainian war, the prices of oil and fertilizers have increased. It has affected the whole world. Therefore, that economic collapse is common to the world. The opposition group in our country is walking around blaming us like a frog in a well, he added.

He added that former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stopped fertilizer subsidies following the advice of doctors and scholars. Otherwise, the things that affected the whole world also affected us.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says that rulers, who ruled the country over last 75 years destroyed this country. But I would like to say that in 75 years they (JVP) destroyed the country from time to time. During then Prime Minister Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike the JVP began a rebellion and caused a lot of destruction in 1971. The country was completely destroyed in the 88, 89 rebellion. Recently a large number of houses, including ours, were set on fire. Buses were set on fire. Buses were thrown into the Beira lake and people were tortured.

“President Ranil Wickremesinghe took charge of the country at a very difficult time. Back then we had gas and fuel. Today, the country is making some progress. The country turns to the right direction. The country is destroyed by riots. A country has not developed with demonstrations. Therefore, the President takes tough decisions and moves forward,” he said.

MP Gunathilaka Rajapaksa said that the Local Government election has become the main topic of discussion in the country these days.

“Yesterday we saw the President informing the House about this Local Government election for almost an hour in Parliament. We saw how the opposition was disorganized. As usual, they brought some boards yesterday and the day before and tried to show the country a different picture. We did not see any programme beyond that from the opposition,” he said. Those born after 2000 don’t know that there was a war. Don’t know about the 88, 89 insurgency. Even if these few people are united, the people know who is sending billions of dollars to the election campaign of that group. Some countries, including the Tamil diaspora, are trying to destroy this country and are helping that group today. The richest party in Sri Lanka is the JVP.
