Brain dead donor saves lives of three in Kandy

The lives of three critically ill patients at Peradeniya hospital were saved after the wife of a 44 year-old  man who was diagnosed as brain dead due to injuries sustained after falling from a tree had agreed to donate his organs.

Peradeniya University Medical Faculty’s senior lecturer surgeon Dr.Buddhika Dasanayake said the

man had fallen from a tree reportedly after going to pick cloves to buy school equipment for his three and half year old son who was to be admitted to a kindergarten facility for education. Dr.Dasanayake said the liver and kidneys of the deceased Bandula Senaratne, a resident of Menikhinna Udagama, was successfully transplanted to three patients in the hospital. The doctors and staff of the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital had worked tirelessly to save the life of Bandula, who fell from the tree and was seriously injured.

After confirming that Bandula, who was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, is brain dead, the doctors had explained to his wife about the situation of her husband and the possibility of obtaining his organs to save the lives of several other patients.
