Emeritus Archbishop of Colombo Most Rev. Oswald Gomis called to eternal rest

Emeritus Archbishop of Colombo and former Vice Chancellor of Colombo University Most Rev Oswald Gomis was called to eternal rest yesterday. He was 90.He has been writing extensively for all the dailies and weekend papers both in Sinhala and English and published a large number of books.

Most Rev. Dr. Oswald Gomis has been instrumental in establishing schools, International Schools and Technical Schools numbering about 15.The Emeritus Archbishop, having obtained his primary education at St. Benedict’s College, Colombo and at St. Paul’s School, Waragoda, continued his collegiate studies at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo.

He completed his theological studies at the National Seminary in Kandy and subsequently obtained the Degree of Master of Arts (Education) from the Adamson University in the Philippines.He was ordained at St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Kotahena in 1958 by former Archbishop of Colombo Thomas Cardinal Cooray.

He served as the Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo from 1968–1996, Bishop of Anuradhapura from 1996 and was installed as the Archbishop of Colombo in 2002.

In recognition of his invaluable services to mankind, he was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Honoris Causa) by one of the ancient universities in China, the Fu Jen University.
