NTC, SLTB to issue pre-paid card for commuters

Southern Expressway passengers get card first:

The National Transport Commission (NTC) and the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has taken steps to issue a prepaid card for the convenience of commuters. This card is valid for both SLTB as well as private buses.

These prepaid cards are issued through the People’s Bank and the National Savings Bank and top-ups of these pre-paid cards can be made through CDM machines of the respective banks instantly and conveniently. Banks will take steps to issue cards free under the first phase.

The Transport Ministry entered an agreement with related financial institutions, yesterday regarding the issue of pre-paid cards under the patronage of Ministry Secretary M.M.K.Mayadunne. It has been revealed that this card system, which is first introduced for bus passengers, can be replaced for train passengers later.

As a pilot project, steps have been taken to issue these prepaid cards for bus passengers on the Southern Expressway, and the inaugural programme in this regard began yesterday at the Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre. In future, the Transport Ministry together with the National Transport Commission and the Sri Lanka Transport Board have planned to expand this programme to the entire country.

It is expected that the Sri Lanka Transport Board, private bus owners and bus crews will find it easier due to these prepaid cards, which are being introduced with the aim of facilitating public passengers in order to prevent them from facing inconveniences in public passenger transport.
