Vishmi’s unbeaten 99 sets up huge win for Rathnavali Balika

Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha, emerged champions in the consecutive second year of the Under 19 Girls’ Division One Inter School Cricket tournament yesterday. They beat Devapathiraja College Rathgama by 27 runs in the final played at Ananda Mawatha Colombo.

This tournament was conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association and sponsored by Sri Lanka Cricket.

The tournament featured six teams – Devapathiraja College Rathgama, Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya Gampaha (A), Anula Vidyalaya Nugegoda, Wadduwa Central College, Princess of Wales’ College Moratuwa, Vijayabahu Maha Vidyalaya Okkampitiya.

After winning the toss Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya opted to bat first and were bowled out 155 runs in 39 overs. Skipper Vishmi Gunarathne, who opened the batting for Rathnavali Balika, powered her side to win with an unbeaten 99 runs in 156 balls with 12 boundaries and 2 sixes. Nipuni Jayasinghe (20) and Hashini Wijesinghe (14) helped to build their innings. Malshi Nirasha claimed 4 wickets for 18 runs and Vihara Sewwandi claimed 3 for 41 runs.

Devapathiraja College, Rathgama replied with only 128 runs in 45.3 overs. Skipper Vihara Sewwandi scored 53 runs in 95 balls with 5 boundaries. Hiruni Hansika (15) and Shashini Gimhani (12) helped to build their innings. Nipuni Jayasinghe claimed 4 wickets for 19 runs and Nikesha Wijesekara claimed 2 wickets for 30 runs.
