Sri Lanka’s air quality gradually improving - NBRO

The ambient air quality status in most of the urban areas showed an improvement yesterday, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) said.

The dynamic air quality with respect to PM2.5 (particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter) remained at the levels of “moderate” and “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in most of the cities yesterday afternoon, according to the data of the Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring Unit of the NBRO.

“The Air Quality Index level for Saturday (24-hour average) indicated an “unhealthy level” (this category means that “everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects”) in Kegalle, while it was “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in Colombo, Jaffna, Kurunegala, Kandy, Rathnapura, Puttalam, Badulla, and Kalutara.

The air quality remained at moderate levels in other cities,” the NBRO said.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Mandous, which caused trans-boundary air pollution, had weakened into a “Low Pressure Area” over north interior Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood, the Indian Meteorological Department announced yesterday. The Cyclone made landfall in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), 16,360 people belonging to 4,825 families in the Badulla, Monaragala, Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Rathnapura, Kegalle, Jaffna, Mullaitivu, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Hambantota, Anuradhapura and Puttalam Districts were affected by high wind on December 7,8 and 9. Two people in Nuwara Eliya and another person in Imbulpe, Ratnapura had died, while 19 people had been injured. About 4,390 houses and 79 business establishments had been damaged.
