Polpithigama Police found a day-old infant abandoned in a paddy field in Pugollagama in Polpithigama and admitted her to the hospital yesterday. According to the police, the child had been first found by a woman who was walking nearby and she had informed the police.
The newborn child had only been wrapped with a piece of cloth and she had not been cleaned well when she was found, police said.
After she was admitted to the hospital, WPC P. Sureka (6621) and dentist Nadeeshani Nimanthika Kalambulla took steps to breast-feed the child. It was reported that the police and the hospital staff had later given the child gifts and essentials at the hospital.
She was to be transferred to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for medical check-ups.
Polpithigama police are investigating.
