Requests action aginst MPs who are Dual Citizens

The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has written to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena requesting an appropriate action on Members of Parliament (MPs) who are Dual Citizens.

PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi, in a letter to the Speaker yesterday, requested him to urgently look into the claims of dual citizenship of MPs in order to protect the dignity of the House.

“Following the passage of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, a public dialogue has once again been created on MPs with dual citizenship. Various names of MPs with dual citizenship are being speculated among the people, and it is not fair of them if those speculations are wrong. This affects the public confidence in Parliament and its Members.

Therefore, we request you to inquire into this matter as soon as possible and take appropriate action,” the letter stated. The PAFFREL also mentioned that it has made an inquiry on this matter from the Immigration and Emigration Controller General. Hettiarachchi pointed out that the loyalty of MPs with dual citizenship remains questionable.
