Sri Lanka’s Nethmi Ahinsa put herself in contention for a Bronze Medal with a tremendous performance on the third day of the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships in Pontevedra, Spain yesterday.

The 18-year-old Commonwealth Games Bronze Medallist from Welpalla, Kurunegala made another fine impact to reach the quarterfinals of the Women’s 55kg weight class and will meet Alisha Sue of the United States in the Bronze Medal bout.

Earlier, Nethmi launched her campaign with a convincing 7-2 victory on points over 19-year-old Tatiana Hurtado of Colombia in a qualifying round fixture with the contest lasting the full six minutes.

Nethmi’s success in this contest was even more significant since Tatiana was fresh after having won a Bronze Medal each at the 2022 Under-20 Pan-American Championships in Mexico and at the 2022 South American Games in Paraguay. In addition, Tatiana was seeded 29th in the World Rankings while in contrast Nethmi started the championship with a World Ranking of 49.

However, Nethmi’s chances of progressing to the semi-finals of this category was shattered when she lost a thrilling contest 9-15 to Mihaela Samoil of Moldova.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Chamodya Keshani was eliminated from the pre quarter-finals of the Women’s 53kg weight class after she suffered a defeat by fall to Zeltzin Hernandez of Mexico in just 1.48 seconds.
