Positive turn in supply chain with reduction of freight charges - ISMM Chief

Things have taken a positive turn in terms of supply chain with more ships coming to the Colombo port and freight rates coming down, Supply and Material Management Institute (ISMM) President Sarath Gamage told the 50th anniversary celebration press conference held in Colombo recently.

He said despite all the challenges the supply chain industry had to face during the past couple of years the industry has shown much resilience with most of the supply chain companies dominating the local stock market and even in the world market out of the top ten companies three companies being supply chain like DHL and Amazon. Meanwhile, the 50th anniversary celebration of ISMM will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel on October 24 under the patronage of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardane.

To commemorate the occasion, an international seminar “Elevating the Economy Through Innovative and Sustainable Supply Chain Solutions” will be held at the Colombo Shangri-La Hotel, Gamage said.

The event will commence on October 24 at 7.45 am with the participation of the Prime Minister as chief guest and Marina Lindik, President of the International Federation of Logistics and Materials Management (IFPSM) as guest of honor. K. M. Mahinda Siriwardana Secretary to the Treasury Ministry of Finance will deliver the keynote address.

The Golden Jubilee Celebration with the participation of more than 400 scholars will be held throughout the day under four technical sessions.

Session One – Service Sector-Banking & Logistics, will be held under Session Chairman: Prof. (Dr.) Ajantha S. Dharmasiri PhD, Professor in Management, Postgraduate Institute of Management University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Sub Topic 1: Challenges of the International Trade and Role of the Commercial Banks will be delivered by Shashi Kandambi Jassim, Senior DGM –International Banking Sampath Bank PLC. Sub Topic 2: The Key Role of the Logistics Sector in Reshaping the Economy will be delivered by Tania Polonnowita Wettimuny, Group Managing Director IAS Holdings (Pvt) Ltd.

Session Two – Manufacturing and Construction Sector will be held under Session Chairman: Maj. Gen. Milinda Peiris, Vice Chancellor, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University Sub Topic 1: Impact of Industry 4.0 on Supply Chain Performance will be delivered by Dr. Thashika Rupasinghe PhD, General Manager – Data Science & Financial Analytics, MAS Capital (Private) Limited Sub Topic 2: A Framework for Economic and Environmental Sustainability and Resilience of Supply Chains will be delivered by Eng. Maj. Ranjith Gunatilleke (Rtd), Managing Director, Sanken Construction (Pvt) Ltd.

Session Three – Agriculture and Environment (Traditional Exports, Value added Exports) will be held under Session Chairman: Prof. Devaka K. Weerakoon PhD, Senior Professor, Department of Zoology and Environment Science, University of Colombo. Sub Topic 1: Strategies to Increase Agriculturally based Exports to Mitigate Prevailing Economic Crisis will be delivered by Dr. W. M. W. Weerakoon PhD, Senior Agriculture Specialist, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations UN Compound. Sub Topic 2: Innovations in export-oriented agriculture to elevate the economy will be delivered by Guest Speaker Suranga Herath, Chief Executive Officer, The English Tea Shop (UK) Ltd, Amazon Trading (Pvt) Ltd.

Session Four – Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy will be held under Session Chairman: Prof. A. A. D. A. J. Perera PhD, Head, Department of Transport and Logistics Management University of Moratuwa Sub Topic 1: Empowering of SMEs to become Foreign Exchange Gainers will be delivered by Guest Dulith Herath Founder and Chairman Kapruka Holdings PLC. Sub Topic 2: Generating Entrepreneurship Culture in the Sri Lankan Society through Innovative & Sustainable Mechanism will be delivered by Senior Prof. H. D. Karunaratne PhD, Vice Chancellor University of Colombo.
