Police Cadets campaign in full swing

Final function of IGP Trophy, Police Cadet Corps., National Camp at Kalutara Police College today:

The Sri Lanka Police Cadets Service was launched under Stanley Senanayake who was the then Inspector General of Police on July 4, 1972 at the Special Police Sub-Services Headquarters located in Longden Place, Colombo, with the objective of creating close association between the public and the police through the Sri Lanka Police, which is a leading institution among the oldest public institutions of the country and with the purpose of bringing about a good generation of youth who are restrained, disciplined and law abiding.

Twelve teachers were chosen from 6 selected schools in the island for the first time to be given a special training on behalf of the Cadets Corps. They were recruited through a Police Gazette Notification published in October 1972 to the posts of Sub-Services, Sub-Inspectors of Police, and Sub-Services Inspectors of Police and deployed in the relevant schools.

Training had been provided in marches, physical exercises, judo, gymnastics and swimming and tasks of self-defence as well as other sports and the Police Cadets Corps., Campaign had been maintained continuously from 1972 to 1985. Subsequently, these activities had come to a halt due to an environment, where various crises prevailed in the country and recommenced in the year 2010.

Then Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya had instructed all Senior DIGs and Senior Superintendents in charge of divisions to recommence Police Cadet Corps.,. activities implemented, centred on 18 National Cadet Corps., centres located in various areas of the island.

Cadet Instructors were recruited so as to promote the Cadets Corps., Campaign and with the objective of establishing a group of Cadets Corps., in every school islandwide. In the year 2021, with the intention of promoting Police Cadet Corps., in the northern and eastern areas, Tamil police officers deployed at police stations in those areas were selected for Cadet Corps., activities and they were also provided with training and arrangements were made to deploy them in instructors’ duties.

Another event of significance that can be mentioned is establishment of the Police Cadet Corps., within the Sri Lanka Police as a Police Cadets Corps. Division, on 16.06.2022. A Senior Superintendent of Police was appointed to supervise work of this division.

By receiving training in police cadet corps., when youth join the police and other defence divisions and get together to carry out duties, this training would be of immense use for them and it will be subject to a very special evaluation as well.

As a very special occasion of the Police Cadet Corps., on the instructions of IGP C. D. Wickremaratne the 2022 IGP Trophy Police Cadets Corps., Camp is being conducted from 06.10.2022 to 13.10.2022 with the participation of both male and female members of the Police Cadet Corps., at the Kalutara Police College. 1311 members of the Cadet Corps., and 225 officers are participating in this national camp.

The final function of the IGP Trophy, Police Cadet Corps., National Camp will be held on 12.10.2022, today, under the patronage of IGP C. D. Wickremaratne and the participation of police officers, officers of the tri-forces, principals, teachers and invitees, at the Kalutara Police College, Aluvihare Stadium.

The purpose of the Police Cadets Corps., is to promote community spirit between the police and the public on behalf of a disciplined society, and to create a peaceful environment sans fear of crimes and violences as well as to contribute to the society a group of youths with qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship, self-assurance, ability to bear responsibilities and self-confidence.
