Army Suranga, another arrested with weapon

Remanded till October 12:

Mulleriyawa Police arrested two suspects including underworld figure Buddhika Prasad alias ‘Army Suranga’ along with a weapon and two fake vehicle number plates in their possession, while they were travelling on a motorbike at Walpola Junction area on Tuesday night.

They were arrested in a search operation conducted by the police based on a tip-off received by the OIC of Mulleriyawa.

The two underworld gangsters Buddhika Prasad alias ‘Army Suranga’ and Chamara Chaturanga, who were arrested in Walpola in the Mulleriyawa police area, were ordered to be remanded till October 12 by Colombo Additional Magistrate T.N.L.Mahawatta yesterday.

‘Army Suranga’ is a suspect against whom cases have been filed for opening fire at the political campaign stage of then presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena in 2014 at Umagiliya ground in Wellampitiya, keeping a pistol without a permit in 2018 and possessing a fraudulent police ID and pretending as a police officer in 2020.

According to the police, the suspects had hidden the weapon and the number plates in a school bag when they were recovered by the police. Police suspect that the duo were travelling to commit a crime on that day. Army Suranga has stated that the weapon belongs to his brother, who left for Dubai about two weeks ago.

However, there are no previous complaints found so far against the other suspect arrested along with Army Suranga, police said.

They were to be produced before the courts. Police are investigating.
