Abdul Sattar beats Arjuna in Snooker finals

The 2022 National Masters Snooker Championship was concluded last Sunday at the SSC. The championship was organized by the SSC and was played for the Ameen Bhaila Challenge Trophy Sponsored by Comfy smart wear. The tournament was conducted by the Billiards & snooker Association of Sri Lanka.

Well over 46 cueists participated at this year’s tournament and keen tussles were seen on the four days of competition packed in to a tight schedule. An additional impetus was that players above the Quarter Final stage were given the opportunity to play at the World Masters Team event to be conducted in Malaysia in the latter part of September 2022.

After keen tussles all the way from the preliminary stages, it was noteworthy that 3 players from SSC played from the Quarter Finals onwards. Whilst Dr. Loshaka Perera of SSC lost to W. M. P. Pushpakumara of ICSC at the Quarter Finals by 2 frames to nil the other losers were famed players of yesteryear M.J. M.Thasleem of Moors, Hashan Thilakartne of YMBA and Prasanna Guruge of Galle Cricket Club.

At this stage SSC already had 2 players Arjuna Waidyasekera and MayuraMalagala playing in the Semi Finals. Whilst Arjuna played his way through to the finals beating W. M. P. Pushpakumara by 3 frames to 1, Mayura Malagalalost in the Semi’s to Abdul Sattar of Moors.

Hence, it was a battle between Abdul Sattar and Arjuna of SSC. In the Finals Abdul Sattar beat Arjuna in straight sets. The finals were adorned by the Chief Guest Ameen Bhaila Managing Director of Comfy Smart Wear and a gathering of distinguished invitees such as the President of the Billiards Association Ziham Hussain and the Secretary Kumara Lanerolle, President and Secretary of the SSC I.S. De Silve and Mr Wasantha Wijesekararespectively. By virtue of their excellent performances Arjuna and Loshaka will team up to play at the World Masters Team Championship in Malaysia whilst the others have opted out of taking part, due to personal reasons.
