UK, Norway lift Travel Advisory against Sri Lanka

The Norway Foreign Ministry in a statement said that security situation in Sri Lanka is now more stable with the lifting of Emergency regulations on August 18.

The Travel Advisory was introduced on May 11 as a result of violent demonstrations, curfews and a State of Emergency in several parts of the country. Protests may still occur, but the scale is considerably smaller, added the statement.

“Although the security situation has improved somewhat, there are still challenges connected to the supply of fuel and medicine in Sri Lanka.

Norwegians who plan to travel to Sri Lanka are encouraged to bring the necessary medication and make sure that hotels and transport have access to enough fuel during their stay,” the statement said.

The UK Government has also lifted the Travel Advisory on Sri Lanka yesterday, stating that it no longer advises against all but essential travel to the island nation. Earlier, the UK Government issued a Travel Advisory against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka mentioning that the country is experiencing a severe economic crisis that has led to shortag es of basic necessities including medicines, cooking gas, fuel and food.

The advisory had also pointed out that the major shortage of fuel (diesel and petrol) is affecting transport, businesses and emergency services, whereas hospitals and other medical services such as ambulances may be affected by shortages.
