A genetic analysis conducted by the Institute of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology of the University of Sri Jayawardanapura confirmed that the COVID Omicron BA5 variant is most prevalent in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam areas, Director of the Unit Dr. Chandima Jeevandara said.
He said that this test was conducted using 67 samples taken from those areas and 60 of them belong to the Omicron BA5 variety and the remaining seven are covid variants.
He also said that the report of the results of this test conducted by the Institute of Allergy, Immunology and Cell Biology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was handed over to the Ministry of Health on the 12th this month.
The COVID-19 Omicron BA5 strain has become the most prevalent virus strain worldwide these days.
