Oversight Committee Chairpersons to get similar powers of a Cabinet Minister

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to delegate the newly appointed Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committee Chairpersons similar powers to that of a Cabinet Minister.

Accordingly, they will also participate in Cabinet meetings when necessary.

The work of appointing the Parliamentary Sectoral Oversight Committees is currently underway and the need to establish several interim committees has also been identified.

According to President’s idea of turning the entire parliament into a government, the oversight committees and the national assembly will be implemented and apart from the members of parliament,  five youth representatives are expected to be involved in the Oversight Committees. Sri Lanka will become the first country where young people participate in such Committees.

The National Assembly is constituted to represent all parties and groups.

This new system will be implemented after the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution is adopted. During the discussions regarding the All-Party Government, the President informed Opposition Parties to decide whether they would represent the committees systematically in turning the parliament into a government, and if not, whether they would join the government.
