Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday (18) stated that neither he nor his party will ever betray the people’s voice represented by the Galle Face protesters.
Premadasa made this statement when several representative groups of the Galle Face Green protestors met the Opposition Leader yesterday (18) at the SJB headquarters to express their standpoint on the action plan they have proposed to manage the prevailing crisis in the country.
During the discussion, the representatives pointed out that the protestors do not agree with appointing Ranil Wickremesinghe as the new President. Convenor of the Inter-University Student’s Federation Wasantha Mudalige pointed out that they will continue with the protests against Ranil Wickremesinghe. “On whatever the grounds, we need to defeat him and we need to do everything in our power, may it be street protests or discussions in order to achieve this objective. We do not represent Parliament. We cannot suggest who the candidate should be. However, we have produced an action plan. So whatever the Government is established, they must follow our action plan.
Responding to the protesters the Opposition Leader said, “Interim Government should be established to follow a specific interim action plan, not a given time schedule. I doubt if we can have a collective consciousness in the House. We have no problem with the protestor’s action plan. This country has gone into bankruptcy. Therefore, I cannot work wonders within a few days nor can I lie to the people about it. We shall focus on fulfilling the basic human needs. Economic management is a strenuous task. While agreeing to IMF conditions, we need to find ways to safeguard the vulnerable communities who will undergo tremendous difficulties due to economic turbulence.”
SJB MP Buddhika Pathirana who was coordinating the meeting stated that the SJB is not ready to stand with Ranil Wickremesinghe with or without conditions.
