A total of 353 players featured with 180 overseas and 173 Sri Lankan players lined up while champion spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, former skippers Thisara Perera, and Angelo Mathews, National white ball skipper Dasun Shanaka and opener Dhanushka Gunatilaka were rated highest value of USD 60,000 each (21.5 million rupees each) at the players draft of the LPL which was held last Tuesday.
The draft for the third edition of the LPL with each of the five franchises allowed to pick six international players, with one from each price category barring Gold and Silver. Sri Lankan players were available for all categories. The pre-draft portion of the squad selection, however, meant that for many of the teams the top-tier draft picks had been decided well in advance of the draft. The tournament director Samantha Dodanwela pointed our several leading foreign players such as Imad Wasim, Asif Ali (Pakistan), Dwaine Pretorius (South Africa) Evin Lewis (West Indies) and 19 year old Dewald Brevis (South Africa) are among the overseas player list.
The teams of Colombo Stars, Jaffna Kings, Galle Gladiators, Kandy Falcons and Dambulla Giants included in the five LPL teams and players were drafted to the five teams of the third edition of the LPL tournament which is the premier franchise cricket tournament conducted by the SLC.
The Players were picked under several categories, such as International Ruby, Sri Lankan Ruby, International Sapphire, Sri Lankan Sapphire, International Diamond ‘A,’ Sri Lankan Diamond ‘A,’ International Diamond ‘B,’ Sri Lankan Diamond ‘B,’ International Platinum, Sri Lankan Platinum, Sri Lankan Gold, and Sri Lankan Silver.
The draft included players in seven price points: Ruby (US$ 60,000; approx LKR 21.5 million) Sapphire ($ 50,000; approx LKR 18 million), Diamond A ($ 40,000; approx LKR 14 million), Diamond B ($ 25,000; approx LKR 9 million), Platinum ($ 15000; approx LKR 5 million), Gold ($ 10,000; approx LKR 3.5 million) and Silver ($ 3000; approx LKR 1 million).
