Ban on Qatar Charity Fund to be lifted

The Government has decided to lift the ban on Qatar Charity, the main charitable arm of the Qatar government. Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera who is on an official visit to Qatar conveyed the Government’s decision to Qatar Charity officials during a meeting that took place yesterday.

The Minister has informed the Charity officials that the Defence Secretary has informed the Attorney General its decision to lift the ban on the Fund.

“Met the Officials of the Qatar Charity yesterday. Conveyed the message that the Defence Ministry has informed the Attorney General its decision to lift the ban on the Fund which was imposed in 2019. Discussed the Charity’s work in SL and globally”, the Minister tweeted.

Qatar Charity works closely with the United Nations and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) among other international entities and is headed by the Qatari Royal Family.

Met the Officials of the Qatar Charity yesterday. Conveyed the message that the Defence Ministry has informed the Attorney General its decision to lift the ban on the fund which was imposed in 2019. Discussed the Charity’s work in SL and globally. The Criminal Investigations Department during the case against lawyer Hejaaz Hizbullah said that they had obtained a freezing order of the account belonging to the Charity.

Qatar Fund opened its office in Colombo in 2018.
