Bourse witnesses volatility over news of higher taxes

Colombo bourse observed a slight index dip yesterday while recording a reasonable volume despite the uncertain economic and political front. Colombo bourse volatility continued yesterday.

Thus, The All-Share Price Index decreased by 84.2 points (-1.0%) to close at 8,231.3 whilst S& P SL20 Index also declined by 13.9 points (-0.5%) to close at 2,719.1.

Ceylinco Insurance, John Keells Holdings, Lanka IOC, Expolanka Holdings and National Development Bank remained as the top negative contributors to the ASPI during the day. Further, broader market’s total turnover stood at Rs. 1,394.6 mn against the 12-month average daily turnover of Rs. 4,662.6 mn, whilst the volume traded for the day was 133976.9k against the 12-month average daily volume of 225,720.5k. Capital Goods, Banks and Transportation mostly contributed to yesterday’s turnover.

The top turnover generators for yesterday were Browns Investments Rs.404.1 mn (+4.0%), Expolanka Holdings Rs.156.0 mn (-0.8%), Hatton National Bank Rs.122.2 mn (+1.0%), Melstacorp Rs. 96.9 mn (+6.9%) and John Keells Holdings Rs. 69.0 mn (-1.2%).

Foreigners recorded a net inflow of Rs. 91.9 mn yesterday. Foreign purchases stood at Rs. 60.6 mn whilst total foreign sales amounted to Rs. 91.9 mn LKR. 4.2 mn. Further, no off-board transactions were witnessed yesterday.

Additionally, Senkadagala Finance, Capital Alliance Finance, Serendib Hotels, SMB Leasing and Nation Lanka Finance were the top price gainers yesterday whilst SMB Leasing (Non-Voting), Colombo City Holdings, Pegasus

Hotel, East West Properties and Laugfs Power were the top price losers.

Further, SMB Leasing (Non-Voting), Browns Investments, LOLC Finance, Seylan Bank (Non-Voting) and Melstacorp were amongst the most actively traded stocks yesterday.

Further, Vidulanka announced a first interim dividend of Rs.0.1 for FY23.
