People’s Organization for Development Import & Export (PODIE), one of Sri Lanka’s leading spice exporters, won the Gold Award in the small-scale spices and related products category at the Industrial Development Board (IDB) Industry Excellence Awards ceremony held with President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the Chief Guest at the Water’s Edge Hotel.

Additionally, PODIE also won the Silver Award in the medium scale organic spice export category at the Export Excellence Awards organized by the National Chamber of Exporters cementing the company’s credentials in its field.

With a history of over 30 years, PODIE has made a significant contribution to the worldwide export of Sri Lankan spices. Their main objective is to add real international value to farmers’ produce. PODIE is chaired by Father Damien Fernando and Tyrell Fernando is the Managing Director.

PODIE exports organic spices pepper, turmeric, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, vanilla, gourd and red rice to Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and European countries adhering to European Organic Quality Certification standards.

PODIE, a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), creates district-level farmer groups for organic farming, providing them with the knowledge and technology they need to buy produce from them at prices above market prices.

Quality Manager Dulaj de Silva said, “Our main objective is to provide the farmer with a high and fair price. Thus preventing injustices meted out to them by middlemen.”
