Russian tourist injured in parachute mishap

A Russian tourist sustained serious injuries after his parachute failed to open during a jump from a cliff in Kondagala, Deltota in Kandy on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Russian tourist has been admitted to the Kandy General Hospital.

He and his wife had come to Sri Lanka on holiday and were visiting the Loolkandura area in Deltota. The Russian tourist’s wife had not taken part in the jump.

It has become a popular feature for many foreigners to parachute from the top of the mountain at Loolkandura, Kondagala. The parachute had got stuck on a tree but the Russian had fallen down as the branch he was hanging onto had broken. Residents who witnessed the incident informed the 1990 ambulance service and the Galaha Police and the Russian national had been taken to the Peradeniya Hospital and later transferred to the Kandy General Hospital for further treatment.

The accident has caused serious injuries to the his spine and legs, hospital sources said. A team including Galaha OIC Chief Inspector Mahagedara has commenced investigations into the incident.
