A massive digitalization project to transform Sri Lankan television into the world’s most advanced technology will be launched in Colombo at the Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo at 7 p.m. today (28).
Minister of Mass Media and Information Dullas Alahapperuma will be the Chief Guest at the launch of this digitalization project.
There is an urgent need to launch the Digital Broadcasting Project, a major revolution in the transformation of the current television broadcasting system (Analogue) in Sri Lanka through outdated technology into the world’s most advanced technology.
The new project which will bring immense privileges and benefits to Sri Lankan TV broadcasters, viewers and the general public as a whole will be launched under a special financial assistance provided by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka.
Currently, each channel has to use individual frequency bands under the local broadcasting system. However, with the new digitization program, the capacity of the Frequency Spectrum in Sri Lanka will increase exponentially, increasing the capacity to a single frequency by eight times or even 800 percent. Due to this, in addition to the existing active television channels in the country, 200 more TV channels will be allowed to broadcast a number of new programmes. The first terrestrial television Channel in Sri Lanka commenced in 1979 and the founding Board of Directors comprising Shan Wickremesinghe, Anil Wijewardene and Bob Christie.
A single Kilo Watt (1K.W) transmitter and 65 ft. transmission tower were used to broadcast the ITN channel within a fifteen (15) mile radius of the city of Colombo. On 5 June 1979, TV Sri Lanka was acquired by the government as an Independent Television Network. The global digitalization process has three components such as the European digital television standard (DVB-T), Japanese standard (ISDB-T) and the American standard (ATSC). Accordingly, the Japanese standard method is being used by Sri Lanka. The new project will be launched under a special financial assistance provided by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka, which will bring immense privileges and benefits to Sri Lankan TV broadcasters, viewers and the general public as a whole.
Accordingly, it must be said that the Digital Television Broadcasting Project, which will commence today (28), will create a revolutionary change in the country’s electronic media space after 40 years.
