Islandwide Freshwater fish Industry encouraged

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources State Ministry has taken steps to uplift the living standards of 2,000 Samurdi beneficiaries throughout the island by providing them with financial assistance for cultivating freshwater fish.

Initially, 36 families of Oddamavadi, Valaichchenai and Kalkuda in the Koralai Pattu Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) were granted cheques for Rs. 250,000 each by PS Chairman Jeyaranjith in Valaichchenai yesterday.

Parliamentarians, Batticaloa District Development Committee Chairman Sivanesadurai Chandrakanthan and TMVP General Secretary Poopalapillai Prasanthan handed cheques over to them.

TMVP General Secretary Prasanthan said that the Budget 2022 includes many proposals to improve the living standards of the rural people.

He said that Batticaloa must contribute substantially to the National productivity and therefore, they must expand cultivating prawns, crabs and fish.

“We must make use of the resources properly to improve the rural economy,” he said.
