The Health authorities have warned that the new A.30 variant of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which does not respond to vaccines, could enter Sri Lanka in the near future.
Recent studies have shown that this new variant can evade vaccine-induced antibodies and might spread outside the lungs extraordinarily well, with important implications for the public health response.
Public Health Inspectors’ (PHIs) Union of Sri Lanka Chairman Upul Rohana said all previous mutations of SARS-CoV-2 identified globally have been detected in Sri Lanka and there is a possibility that this new A.30 variant will enter Sri Lanka.
Considering this danger, the Health authorities urge the public to strictly adhere to health guidelines.
As per the recent reports, the new variant has been reported in several countries, and reportedly does not respond to any existing vaccine.
Therefore although Sri Lanka has a high vaccination rate, if the new variant enters the country, it could lead to higher infection levels.
