‘Majority of Covid deceased unvaccinated’

Seventy six per cent of the 11,500 people who have died of COVID had not received any vaccine, Director of Medical Technology Services and Chief Coordinator of COVID-19 at the Ministry of Health Dr. Anwar Hamdani said.

“Of the remaining 24 per cent, 18 per cent had received only one dose and had not received proper immunity with the first dose,” he said. Dr. Anwar was addressing the media after a ceremony at the Kandy National Hospital on September 14.

He said that only 6 per cent of the reported COVID deaths had been attributed to those who had received both doses of the vaccine. He said that 2,802 COVID bodies had been buried at the Ottamawadi National COVID Burial Centre and of them, 2,501 were Muslims, 160 were Hindus, 88 were Buddhists and 53 were Catholics. Of the bodies buried in Ottamawadi, 1,674 were male and 1,128 were female, he said. He said that there was room for another 2,000 bodies in Ottamawadi and that there were requests from the Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Puttalam Districts to provide alternative burial grounds for their burials.
