Batticaloa: 68 COVID-19 positive cases in last 24 hours

Within the last 24 hours, 68 people have been identified as COVID-19 positive, Batticaloa Regional Health Services Director Dr. Nagalingam Mayooran said at a media briefing held at his office yesterday.

He said that 8,275 positive COVID-19 cases have been identified to date in the Batticaloa District. Of them, 116 are dead, and 69 percent is above the age of 60.

During the third wave, 7,292 COVID-19 positive patients and 107 deaths were reported in the district. Up to now, 142,754 people in the Batticaloa District have been vaccinated.

“Vaccination programmes are being held in base hospitals, divisional hospitals, churches, schools and community centres in the Batticaloa District. All those who are above 30 are eligible to get vaccinated. We are expecting 100,000 vaccines for the district,” he said.

There are 12,000 teachers in the Batticaloa District and a majority of them has received the first dose and they will be given the second dose after a month. Those who are going abroad, if they wish to get other vaccines, must apply online.

“The vaccination increases the body’s immunity in people above 60 years. Therefore, if they have any Non- Communicable Diseases, these vaccines will help them to recover soon.

The Family Health Bureau of the Health Ministry has advised pregnant women to get their vaccine after 12 months of pregnancy. People who take the vaccine must refrain from hard work during the first three days after being vaccinated,” he added.
