Planting saplings, seeds: Best solution to protect environment – Minister Amaraweera

Planting more and more trees and seeds in the vicinity of houses is the best solution to protect the environment in the country as it will immensely help generate clean air for humans, animals and fauna and flora, Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

The Minister made these remarks at a ceremony held in Angunukolapelassa to coincide with the `International Environment Day’, which fell on June 5 (Saturday). The Minister planted a valuable tree at his home garden to mark the occasion.

Minister Amaraweera highlighted that the Government has focused special attention towards the destruction of valuable forests ranges, cultivable lands and most important mangroves in wetlands by people for their own goals.

“Due to this large scale environmental destruction, the environment has become severe threat for generations to come,” he said .

Minister Amaraweera said that due to the pandemic, most people , especially, school children, are at their homes and they could plant trees and seeds in their home gardens.

The Minister made a fervent request from schoolchildren to plant trees and engaged in other similar environment protection activities such as destroying dengue breeding grounds in their home gardens during their leisure time.

He requested children to video such home garden activities and send them to the Environment Ministry Head office in Colombo and steps will be taken to grant a cash award of Rs. 5,000 each for the selected documentary every day to recipients.
