New curriculum based on self-study for Grade 6, 10 students in 2023

A new curriculum based on self-study will be introduced to students studying in Grades 06 and 10 in 2023, according to Dr. Upali Sedere, Secretary to the State Ministry of Education Reforms, Open Universities and Distance Education Promotion.

Sedere said the model will be designed to make it easier for children to study at home, even when schools are closed during emergencies such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.

He was speaking at the launch of 2,564 books written by students, lecturers and alumni of Mahamaya College, Kandy on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of the college last Friday.

The Secretary to the Ministry of State said that instead of heavy books with a large number of pages, children will receive books of about 20 pages in size under this programme and will be given the opportunity to learn compulsory subjects as well as subjects of their choice.

He emphasized that the new programme would diversify education in the country and that instead of every child learning the same things, children would have the opportunity to learn multiple things.

He said that the National Institute of Education is preparing books to be used for this purpose under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.

Sedere said that principals and teachers should also should adapt to implement the education reform program and that the training of teachers on the new teaching methods will begin in March after the principals are trained.
