Lohan Ratwatte out to promote sports in Kandy

 State Minister of Gem and Jewellery related Industries Lohan Evindra Ratwatte, was a good sportsman who excelled in rugby, as a player cum coach during his peak days. A product of Trinity College he is all out to promote sports in his home town Kandy which has no proper venues for matches and some schools even don’t have a place to do their training. So, this sports loving state minister is all-out to give his best.  

 He was a member of the 1987 Trinity College unbeaten side, which won the league and the R.Premadasa trophy. That is the year Trinity College last won the League,precisely 33 years ago. The 1987 1st XV of Trinity was regarded as one – if not the best, XV produced by hill capital College. This is purely for the clean sheet they maintained against formidable sides,for the brand of rugby they dished out and for the abundance of talent they possessed. He also played for Outstation Schools, Kandy Sports Club and Up-Country. and was also one time Trinity college junior and senior coach.  

 In that year they played 12 games and won all 12. A staggering 291 points scored including wins over St. Anthony’s (49-0), St.Josephs (52-0) and S. Thomas (52-0) and at the Premadasa Trophy final win over league runners up Isipathana 17-10 to be crowned the undisputed official schools champions.

Only a measly 25 points were scored against TCK that year and only once was their line crossed for a try.  Trinity in this defining year was led by Tyrell Jason Rajapakse. and was coached by Alex Lazarus and S. Ariyasingam was the MIC and the players were Lohan Ratwatte, Janinda Dunuwille, Dilshan Senanayake,Tyrrel Rajapakse (Captain), Takshila Hettiarachchi, Prasad Dissanayake, Nishantha Abeysinghe, Dasarath Kiridena, Rohan Ranarajah, Shah Doole, Nilantha Rathnayake, Senani Gunaratne, Rajiv Bandaranayake, Upul Gunaratne, Shammi Upendra, Imthisham Marikar, Bindu Dandeniya.  

His father late Anuruddha Ratwatte too was a sports promoter and one time was committee member and secretary of Kandy Sports Club.
