Mobitel the National Mobile Service Provider has come forward to sponsor the National Surf Championship 2020 as its Official Telecommunication Partner. The event is organized by the Surfing Federation of Sri Lanka (SFSL). The National Surfing Championship is one of the most anticipated events in the water sports calendar. The event is set to take place in Arugambay on September 26 and 27.

The surfing Championship is a timely initiative by the Ministry of Youth affairs and Sports and Ministry of Tourism. The combination of these two ministries towards SFSL in conducting these events not only set a fine start for the local surfing fraternity and to foreigners who eagerly awaits this sport here in Sri Lankan waters. These events which get off the mark will also help revive the tourism industry that had a setback due to covid-19 pandemic.

Though tourists are not expected to arrive for the open event due to travel restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic issue, tourists who were keen on surfing and who could not return to their motherland will take this great opportunity to compete in the event along with local surfers on this day.

Their participation will sure to add colour to the open event while it will be vital for our local surfers to gain experience facing foreign competition at the highest level in local waters. These foreigners’ are here for competitive sport but our local surfers are to face stiff challenge from these foreign competitors on these two days.

The National Championship will consist of over 50 surfers while the open championship includes 28 foreigners. The locals expected for the open event will be the top 16 surfers. There will also be few women surfers who have consented to take part in this while a junior event too is to be introduced with the intention of promoting the sport among our local sport loving youngsters.

Mobitel is proud to come on board as the official telecommunications partner, powering the hopes of thousands of local and foreign surfers who are keen on our beaches and locations. The event coincides with the World Tourism Day which falls on September 27.
