The Professionals’ National Front (PNF) called on the Government to abolish the Provincial Councils (PCs) claiming that they were never really present in Sri Lanka, and set up only to cede power to India.

PNF representatives made these comments at the Organisation of Professional Associations, to which it affiliated on September 9.

Dr. Samantha Ananda called the PCs white elephants. He claimed that the PCs were maintained to create state-subsidised jobs, not for deserving people but for politicians who were rejected at General Elections.

Dr. Ananda called on the public to understand that those who were rejected by them are continuing to remain in politics through the PC system.

Dr. Ananda said that the 19th amendment was drafted disregarding the public views. The PNF has raised 19 issues with the proposed 20th amendment and will discuss them with the Government, he said.

The PNF members said that Milinda Moragoda of the Pathfinder Foundation is not suitable for the post of Indian High Commissioner. They said that Moragoda had opposed the PC system strongly, but his ties to an NGO and his foreign citizenship make him unsuitable for the post.
