Yan Oya re-settlers to receive compensation soon

The compensation payments for the re-settlers of the Yan Oya Reservoir project will be made before long. The project has been completed months back at a cost of Rs. 36,000 million and will be vested in the public within a few months, reliable sources from the project said.

According to the project management, Rs. 2,000 million remains as outstanding arrears of compensation and already Rs. 3,000 millions have been paid.

A spokesman of the project told Daily News that in addition to 6,000 thick forest covers of the Forest Conservation Department, 3,500 acres of paddy land were submerged to the 149,000 acre feet of the Yan Oya Reservoir Project.

The Yan Oya Reservoir contains 138,000 acre feet of Yan Oya River water. The Spokesman said that 219 low income families depended on single season cultivation for centuries have now received new housing facilities and other infra-structural facilities.

The Yan Oya Reservoir now holds around 130,000 acre feet of water after releasing a large volume to 11,000 acres of canals. The left bank canal (18.9 Km) has filled Padaviya Jayanthi Tank to the spilling level enabling the padaviya farmers to cultivate three seasons per year.

Essanwewa, Omarakada, Indulhitiyawa, Moragama and Kohombagaswewa are provided with drinking water from the project. The reservoir also provides 12,000 MT of fish annually to the value of Rs. 2,400 million.
