Four SLAF personnel killed in aircraft crash at Haputale

Four Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) personnel including two officers died when a Y 12 surveillance aircraft crashed in Haputale yesterday morning. The aircraft on an observation tour was set to land at the Weerawila air base after its mission when the accident took place.

Police said that the aircraft has crashed into a barren land thus avoiding major damage to civilians and their property

Airforce Spokesman Group Captain Gihan Seneviratne said a special investigation team consisting of experts of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has been appointed to look into the causes that led to the crash.“This expert team is presently conducting a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the crash,” he said. Asked whether this was a crash-landing, Group Captain Seneviratne said that those details would be revealed after the on-going investigations are complete.

Area residents claimed that the plane crashed in foggy conditions.

An eye witness said the plane hit a tree and crashed into a barren land shocking the onlookers.

Police said that the aircraft has crashed into a barren land thus avoiding major damages to the civilians and their property

"This experts team is presently conducting a through investigation to ascertain what has caused to the crash and we are waiting the outcome of the investigation", he said
