‘Easter Sunday attacks, not to be used for political gain’

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Political Bureau member Vijitha Herath yesterday requested the public not to use the Easter Sunday terror attacks to aid their own political agendas.

“Sensitive reactions to such situations can cause more tragedies,” he said, adding that the public should act in a peaceful manner at this moment. Speaking to the media in Colombo, yesterday, Herath condemned the attacks that took place at several places, including Catholic churches and hotels on a sacred day. He also criticised the failure of the country’s political leadership to take prompt action against such incidents while having reliable information. It is a serious situation, he said.

“The government’s duty is to ensure the people’s security. Political authorities are responsible to take necessary action when officials report information on possible threats,” Herath said.

He also highlighted the importance of an immediate investigation into this series of attacks: “The Government must take the responsibility to examine the incident and provide the true information to the public,” he added. The JVP also conveyed its sympathies to the relatives of the deceased while wishing for the speedy recovery of the injured.
