Family held for smuggling attempt at BIA

Several individuals who were members of the same family were nabbed by Sri Lanka Customs officials at the BIA for attempting to smuggle in stocks of different goods, on Wednesday.

The family consisted of the father, mother, son, and son’s wife and children. According to the Sri Lanka Customs, the family had arrived from India on flight number UL 128.

Customs officials had found in their possession a large stock of perfumes and cosmetics which had been brought to the country without prior approval from the National Drug Regulatory Authority. They also recovered 25 cartons of cigarettes and 30 bottles of European whiskey.

The arrest was done by Sri Lanka Customs Superintendents G.M.B. Gajanayake and Ravi Kumaran and Assistant Superintendents R.M.A.L. Ratnayake and D.M.G. Daniel, under the supervision of Additional Director General Saman Ranawana.

Sri Lanka Customs Deputy Director Jagath Obeysekera ordered the confiscation of the goods.
