No power cuts from today

The Power and Renewable Energy Ministry announced that power cuts were stopped from yesterday. The second generator of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant that had gone out of commission was back on track by yesterday adding 300 MW of electricity to the national grid.

The boiler system of the plant has commenced operations and will be back to normal by today, sources said.

The ministry on Monday announced nation-wide power cuts following the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant break down on October 15, due to a sudden failure in the high power electricity wire system. The ministry decided to impose one and a half hour power cuts across the country, excluding Colombo, industrial cities and hospitals.

The three-generator Norochcholai coal power plant contributes the major share to meet the country’s electricity demand by adding 900 megawatts to the national grid.
