Cabinet paper on restructuring Fisheries Corporation

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Mahinda Amaraweera will present a Cabinet paper on the restructuring of the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation (CFC) at today’s Cabinet meeting, ministry sources said.

Plans are underway to operate the CFC as a joint collaboration with a Korean company. But the government has not yet decided which company to collaborate with, a Fisheries Ministry spokesman said.

Preliminary agreement in this regard was reached during last week’s Cabinet meeting, the sources added.

The CFC is now a loss-making state institution which is unable to even pay the salaries of its employees. Currently the Fisheries Corporation has a surplus of employees. According to Minister Amaraweera there are 1,113 employees at the CFC whereas its requirement is only 642 .

There has been no favourable response from the employees for a voluntary retirement scheme and a final decision has to be taken soon, Amaraweera said. For the past eight months, the CFC has obtained Rs. 700 million from the Treasury to run the institution with Rs. 210 million to pay the salaries, the sources further revealed.
